Prestigious prize goes to Dublin
art gallery
The National Gallery of Ireland has come runner-up for a prestigious
art-catalogue-award in London.
The Art Newspaper and AXA Art Exhibition award was presented to the Irish
gallery for the catalogue which accompanised their Samuel Beckett: A Passion
For Paintings exhibition.
The audience on the night were told the Irish catalogue was admired for
the quantity of new material it presented.
Head of Exhibitions at National Gallery of Ireland Fionnuala Croke said:
“We are delighted to be named runner-up, especially in the company
of so many very excellent catalogues by other galleries.
“It was also particularly encouraging to receive the award because
the catalogue is not exactly typical — it showed that the judges
really looked at the content.”
The catalogue was described as an important bridge between the worlds
of literature and visual arts helping its reader to understand both better.
The award ceremony is now in its fifth year and accolades are offered
to catalogues of outstanding quality.
The award was originally set up to celebrate one of the most important
areas of art book publishing.
Speaking for the awards, Diana Cawdell said: “Exhibition catalogues
rarely get the acclaim they deserve, despite being the source of some
of the newest ideas and research.”
The winner of this year’s award was the Hayward Gallery on London’s
South Bank and their publication Undercover Surrealism.
