Pop promoter dies

ONE of Ireland’s top concert promoters Jim Aiken died last week following a short illness.

The 74-year-old who became famous for changing the face of the music industry was fondly known as ‘Gentleman Jim’ by people who knew him well.

A popular man he was responsible for bringing in big-name international acts like Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to perform high-profile concerts in the Emerald Isle.

Aiken was the first promoter to stage concerts in Dublin’s historical Croke Park Neil Diamond in the 1980s and Slane Castle, Co. Meath Thin Lizzy and U2 in 1981, followed by The Rolling Stones. The two venues are now an integral part of the live music landscape.

Jim Aiken leaves behind his son Peter who has been running Aiken Promotions for a number of years.

Other huge names that Aiken brought to Ireland included Rod Stewart, Pavarotti, Simon and Garfunkel and Paul McCartney.
