| Pop promoter dies ONE
of Ireland’s top concert promoters Jim Aiken died last week following
a short illness.
The 74-year-old who became famous for changing the face of the music industry
was fondly known as ‘Gentleman Jim’ by people who knew him
well.
A popular man he was responsible for bringing in big-name international
acts like Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Bob
Dylan to perform high-profile concerts in the Emerald Isle.
Aiken was the first promoter to stage concerts in Dublin’s historical
Croke Park Neil Diamond in the 1980s and Slane Castle, Co. Meath Thin
Lizzy and U2 in 1981, followed by The Rolling Stones. The two venues are
now an integral part of the live music landscape.
Jim Aiken leaves behind his son Peter who has been running Aiken Promotions
for a number of years.
Other huge names that Aiken brought to Ireland included Rod Stewart, Pavarotti,
Simon and Garfunkel and Paul McCartney.
