GARDAÍ have launched a murder investigation after the discovery of an Englishman’s body in a farm shed’s slurry tank.
The body was discovered in the slurry pit on a non-residential west Cork farm.
Superintendent Pat Maher confirmed gardaí were treating the death as suspicious.
Locals revealed that a man who moved into the area months ago had not been seen in recent weeks.
The body was found on a farm at Shanlaragh some eight kilometres north-east of Dunmanway on the Macroom side.
Gardaí had reportedly received notification of suspicious activity in the area the previous night.
Officers conducted a search of outbuildings before finding the body in the slurry pit which had a depth of up to three metres.
It is believed to be that of a new-age traveller from England who had been living for some time near Kilmichael in Co. Cork.
Kay McSweeney who lives nearby said she was stunned to learn of the discovery.
She said: “This is a very quiet place and you rarely see anybody on the farm. It’s owned by a man who resides in Dunmanway but he doesn’t live on the farm here.”
The farm is situated at the end of a 300-yard boreen off a regional road.
“We are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed anything suspicious around the farm in recent weeks to contact us,” said Supt Maher. |
