Learning about Irish history

IRISH History Month is set to be launched in Leeds on Sunday March 4.

It’s a pioneering venture in Britain and has been set-up to promote knowledge of Irish history and experiences throughout Britain and beyond.

Its aim is to display information on the many positive contributions that the Irish have made to British society and also to introduce new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, culture and history.

There is a programme of events to suit all tastes including music and dance workshops, Irish food tasting, Celtic arts and crafts and a performance from Mayo band Ceide.

A lecture programme is also taking place at the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University with a number of lecturers travelling over from Ireland.

Fans of visual arts are in for a treat as there are a number of displays including the National Museum of Ireland’s Streets of London photographic depiction of the Irish in Britain and the impressive collection of photos from the Roísín Bán exhibition which focuses on the Irish in Leeds.

There are also a number of concerts and recitals featuring local and national musicians and performers. The launch will take place at the Carriageworks Theatre on Millennium Square in the heart of Leeds.
