Irish icons in the picture in Birmingham

The pride of Birmingham and Coventry’s Irish Diaspora has been immortalised in an innovative new art project.

The concept has been created by the Birmingham Irish Community Forum and features a series of six giant graffiti portraits along the city’s Aisling Heights area.

The images chosen are of individuals who have contributed not only to the Irish community but also to the people of the Midlands.

And those honoured include Sister Sabrina Staff who has been a stalwart of the homeless community of Birmingham for many years.

Deputy Lord Mayor Michael Nangle — the first Irish-born Lord Mayor of Birmingham — Bob Brolly the BBC Radio presenter, Carole Scanlon, Father Joe Taafe and Jon Fitzgerald also feature in the exhibition.

The portraits will remain on Aisling Heights hoardings for the foreseeable future.

But in time they will move on to future housing developments planned for the Irish Quarter.

Further heroes from the sporting and entertainment worlds are also set to be added.

If you would like to recommend an individual to be added to the Local Heroes Portraits project who is of Irish descent, Midlands-based and an exceptional example in their field, contact Joyce at the Birmingham Irish Community Forum on 0121 622 4102 or e-mail info@irishforum.co.uk
