Irish developer’s role in London project

An Irish billionaire developer is to help design one of Britain’s biggest ever developments.

Seán Mulryan’s company Ballymore Properties is set to help pave the way for a London Docklands project that will rival neighbouring Canary Wharf.

The Wood Wharf scheme was unveiled last week and the Irish design firm will now start public consultation with two other partners on the £4billion commercial property development.

Chief operating officer of Wood Wharf Partnership Damian Wisniewski said:

“Wood Wharf is a key strategic regeneration project for London, complementing both the Thames Gateway and the development of the Olympic zone and further enhancing Canary Wharf’s reputation as one of the world’s most vibrant business centres.

“The site has the potential to deliver thousands of new jobs, some of the best located and designed affordable housing in the country and a world-class waterfront.”

The seven-hectare site is located in the north-eastern corner of the isle of Dogs and will be transformed into a brand new urban quarter — with new jobs and new retail and leisure facilities set within the waterside environment.

Plans also include the development of a number of towers, which will contain about 1,400 new homes.

This would make the new cityscape the highest density building project in London.

Situated next to Canary Wharf, it will form a major part of one of the world’s newest and most vibrant business and financial districts.

Founded 25 years ago in Co. Kildare, Ballymore first set its sights on the prospects of London’s docklands in the early 1990s, when the area was still very much down-at-heel.

Ballymore is now one of the biggest developers in the area.

Current projects include Leamouth Peninsula, Pan Peninsula, Baltimore Wharf and New Providence Wharf.

The company has over 50 projects in Ireland, Britain and across central Europe.

It set up Ballymore International Developments over the summer to invest in property outside Ireland and Britain.
