Ireland’s war dead honoured

Ireland's war dead have been honoured at a ceremony in the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham.

Family and colleagues of those who died in past wars or during service with the United Nations attended the event marking the National Day of Commemoration.

Among them were relatives of the 1916 leaders.

Representatives from the North of Ireland also travelled to Dublin for the occasion.

President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern led the State presence at the ceremony which began with a multi-faith prayer service.

Inviting the religious leaders to begin the service Mr Ahern said: “It is fitting that we remember here today all those Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.”

Mrs McAleese laid a wreath in honour of the fallen servicemen and women on behalf of the people of Ireland.

A one-minute silence was observed before an Army Cadet guard of honour rendered honours and the Last Post was sounded by trumpeters and drummers.

Election spending

The SDLP spent the most money of any party on the March Assembly election in the North according to figures published by the Electoral Commission.

They showed that the party spent just over 296,000 around twice the amount of the next biggest spender the DUP.

Most money went on advertising, market research, canvassing and party election broadcasts, with the Ulster Unionists spending around 111,000 and Sinn Féin spending just over 89,000.

Two small parties the Socialist Environmental Alliance and the Workers Party have both been fined 739 for failing to supply accounts while the UUP has been fined the same amount for late filing.

Three Charged

Gardai investigating the murder of a man whose body was found in a freezer have arrested three people.

Patrick McCormack’s body was found in a plastic container placed in a Galway fish shop’s freezer room this week.

Just hours after the gruesome discovery gardaí arrested a 43-year-old man in the Knocknacarra area of the city.

He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Galway garda station.

Two females one in her 20s and the other in her 40s were also arrested in relation to the murder.

The arrests of the women took place in the Ballybane and city centre areas of Galway.
