Health warnings to be printed in Irish too

A PRIMARY schoolteacher has won her High Court bid to have health warnings on cigarette packets in Ireland published in Irish as well as English.

Caitríona Uí Riain took an action against the Minister for Health and Children and the State demanding the dual language warning.

Her legal challenge was settled last week when the Government agreed to a mandatory order requiring it to amend the relevant law by October 1.

It will mean health warning and information notices on cigarette packets will be published in the same size in Irish and English.

Ms Uí Riain is a teacher at a primary school in the Rathcairn Gaeltacht in Co. Cavan.

In her action she cited a European Union directive which said that where a State has more than one official language it should provide health warnings in each of those languages on cigarette packets.

The Department of Health said bilingual warnings would be placed on products manufactured from October 1 this year onwards with a period of 12 months to allow for sell-through of existing stock.
