Film world gathers to mourn young actor

SOME of the most-famous Irish names from stage and screen gathered last week to remember the life of acclaimed young actor Tom Murphy.

The Tony award-winning thespian died in hospital after a short battle with cancer aged 39.

At his funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church in Lucan in Dublin the congregation was swelled by dozens of colleagues from theatre, television and film work including actors Séan McGinley and Gerard Byrne and Druid Theatre director Garry Hynes.

“He was our young brother, we just love you Tom and we miss you. May you rest in peace bro,” his devastated brother Michael said.

His sister Sheila and niece Emma placed a copy of a theatrical script along with a photograph of the family as young children on his coffin.

A number of simple bouquets and wreaths graced the church including one from Hollywood star Stuart Townsend.

Fr Joe Coyne urged mourners to remember all of the young actor’s achievements in his short life.

The star — best-known for his starring role as a drug addict in Adam and Paul — won his Tony Award for his role in the Druid Theatre Company production of The Beauty Queen Of Leenane in 1998.

“All of us in Druid are terribly saddened by his premature death,” said the theatre’s artistic director Garry Hynes.

“Tom was a much loved friend and colleague. He was a great member of the company.”
