Dancer steps in right direction Performer
Colin Dunne has been nominated for a prestigious London dance award for
his role in an Irish-directed dance theatre production earlier this year.
And the former Riverdance star now hopes to add a British National Dance
Award to the numerous world-dancing titles that he has accumulated over
the years.
Dunne is nominated in the best male for his role in The Bull in the modern
dance category along with dancers from prestigious companies such as The
Royal Ballet.
Director and choreographer of The Bull, Dubliner Michael Keegan Dolan,
has also been nominated for an award for Best Choreography for his satirical
take on modern day Ireland.
The award night will take place next January at The Royal Opera House
in Covent Garden.
In The Bull Dunne plays the role of Fergus O’Rourke — the
lead dancer in a tacky Irish dance production called Celtic B*tch.
And critics lauded the performance by Dunne who was a recipient of an
Irish Post Award in 1998 for Outstanding Achievement In Dance.
Dunne has won a record nine World Irish Dancing Championships —
his first coming in 1978.
He is also involved in several other projects including being part of
the judging panel for RTÉ’s New Year’s Eve special
of Celebrity Jigs and Reels alongside Jean Butler and George Hook.
Now based in Co. Clare, the dancer will open his new one-man show Out
Of Time early next year at the Glor Theatre in Ennis.
The award-winning performer then hopes to bring the show, which he describes
as a “playful look at his relationship with traditional dance over
the years through dance, film and spoken word” to Britain in 2009. |
