Clues to the identity of man with amnesia unravel
The mystery surrounding the identity of an amnesic man in Greater Manchester
who speaks with an Irish accent and says only ‘boxing’ and
‘Tipperary’, may be unravelled in Kilkenny.
John Maher lives in the village of Freshford and spotted the picture of
the man, named David Hutchinson by the Missing People charity while they
struggle to uncover his true identity, in the Irish press last week.
The 79-year-old told The Irish Post: “I know that face; he has the
look of a man named Willie Walsh who left our village about 30 years ago.
“He has not been back since but my son and my wife and I were very
much taken aback when we saw this picture.
“It would be better if the picture was head on but the eyes are
exactly those of Willie’s and I am pretty sure it is him.”
Willie Walsh is believed to have lived in Freshford with his mother Kit
and brothers and sisters, including Paddy Walsh who may still live in
the town, before leaving for good in the 1970s.
John’s wife Moira, 73, added: “The Walsh family would always
be going back and forth from England, then at one stage Willie didn’t
come back.
“He used to work at Paddy Dooley’s farm before he left, so
maybe that will jog other readers’ memories.”
David is 5ft 5in tall and has been under the care of Oldham Council in
Lancashire since 2000 when a fall led to his amnesia and organic brain
injuries being discovered.
He has been registered as ‘unidentified’ with Missing People
ever since.
The charity has yet to confirm whether this man is Willie Walsh but
maintain David may have lived or been born in Ireland.
