| Bradford community save their Irish
centre The Irish community in Bradford are rejoicing after securing
the future of their centre.
Members at the old Irish members club in the town knew something had to
be done if they were to save the threatened centre.
So they decided to change the constitution of the society from a private
members club to a not-for-profit organisation called the Bradford Irish
Centre Ltd.
This enables them to apply for funding from organisations such as the
Lottery and Díon.
Club secretary Michael Flaherty said: “This follows a lengthy legal
battle but we have totally changed the constitution of the club and as
far as we know this is the first time something like this has been done
in Britain.”
The club will open seven days a week and will run luncheon clubs, Irish
language classes, dancing classes and dance nights.
They have over 1,000 members an increase of about 300 on last year.
They have also applied for Díon funding this year to build a kitchen.
The next event at the club will be a dance night on Saturday, April 28.
Tickets for the night are £3.25 for adults and £1.50 for children
and doors will open at 7.30pm. There will be a set dancing display on
the night from Mary Lewis set dancers and music by Richard O’Brien.
