Bloodbath at care centre A PSYCHIATRIC patient went
on a rampage stabbing two doctors and leaving one fighting for his life.
Anthony McMahon who had just completed a seven-year sentence for manslaughter
repeatedly stabbed forensic psychiatrist Dr Ananth Pullela and his colleague
Dr Kathleen Burns at St. Anne’s Psychiatric Day Care Centre in Limerick.
One eyewitness compared the scene to an abattoir.
Dr Pullela was this week in intensive care in hospital while Dr Burns
was also being treated but was said to be in a stable condition.
Both were attending a clinic when the attack occurred.
Gardaí arrested 32-year-old McMahon at the scene.
They described him as a violent criminal who was recently released from
prison after serving a seven-year sentence for the manslaughter of homeless
man Anthony O’Shea in 2001 in Limerick city centre.
The two doctors were holding a clinic at St. Anne’s Psychiatric
Day Care Centre when McMahon burst in brandishing a knife.
According to witnesses he shouted and screamed as he repeatedly lunged
at the two medical professionals — chasing one of them up a corridor.
One source said: “He attacked Dr Pullela in a corridor and he then
returned to the reception area where he attacked Dr Burns.
“During the attacks a nurse pleaded with him to stop. He was covered
in the blood of the two victims.
“After the nurse pleaded with him he sat down and put the knife
down on the floor.
“The whole place was spattered with blood. It was like an abattoir.
Everybody was screaming in fear.” |
