Backing the building of St. Joseph’s school

By Niamh Hennessy

ONE of Britain’s leading Catholic schools has launched a major campaign to raise money for building work.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in the London Borough of Harrow officially launched its Building Fund Campaign recently.

Having successfully bid for £1.6million to build four new classrooms and an excellence centre the school has to raise 10 per cent of the building costs.

The project contractors are Westfields Construction Company and work is due for completion this coming

September.

The campaign launch at the school which has very strong Irish links was attended by Bishop George Stack and Councillor Marilyn Ashton, along with local businesses, governors, parents, staff and pupils.

After listening to speeches by the chair of governors and the headteacher pupils and parents gathered in the playground to watch the Bishop bless the site.

This was followed by a ceremonial handing-over of a time capsule containing several items including digital film, photos and pupils’ work that had been prepared by the pupils while hundreds of balloons were released.

Headteacher Phil Sutton said: “The turnout of pupils and parents far exceeded our expectations. The balloon launch was incredibly exciting as was the handing over of our time capsule. We could not have got the campaign off to a better start. We are particularly grateful to the generous support of our parents and to local businesses especially Blacklers Estate Agents.”

The event was a great success with £10,000 being raised on the afternoon.

If you find a stray balloon or feel you can help St. Joseph’s with their fundraising by either a financial donation or in any other way you can contact the school by telephoning: 020 8863 8531.
