Arnotts to relocate while new store is built FOR almost
175 years Arnotts has been one of Ireland’s most iconic department
stores.
But now the famous Dublin store is moving for three years while a new
premises is built as part of a €1billion transformation of an eight-acre
site between Abbey Street and Henry Street.
Later this year some departments will relocate to the neighbouring Jervis
Centre, previously occupied by Debenhams.
When it returns to Henry Street in 2011 it will employ 1,200 staff as
part of a 5,000-strong workforce in the newly-developed Northern Quarter.
The news came as staff geared up for a €60,000 pension windfall
after Arnotts trustees decided to distribute €50million of the surplus
in the company’s pension fund to employees.
Drugs haul
GARDAÍ have smashed a major drugs supply route into Ireland after
arresting four men and seizing a huge cannabis shipment.
One of the men is regarded by officers as a significant drug trafficker
operating on the northside of Dublin.
The two seizures of cannabis resin combined to make the haul almost as
big as the total for all of last year.
Gardaí recovered more than 1,500 kilos in connected seizures near
Kill in Co. Kildare and in Clongorey near Newbridge.
Senior officers believe the cannabis was part of a bigger consignment
brought into the country within the past week.
The drugs recovered have an estimated street value of more than €10.5million.
Leaking loo
PEOPLE attempting to spend a penny at a Superloo in Tuam in Co. Galway
say they are being short-changed.
The hi-tech public convenience has attracted a flood of complaints with
the town’s Mayor and local councillors leading the clamour to have
it removed.
In one incident a woman was soaked when the self-cleaning unit activated
itself as she was using it.
And young courting couples have been discovered using the spacious facility
for late-night frolics.
“I don’t think it has worked properly for even one week since
it was installed,” said Tuam Mayor Martin Ward.
“We want a permanent toilet instead.
“If we built a concrete structure in its place and employed a caretaker
it would be far better and far cheaper.”
The Mayor has now won backing to have the loo removed and replaced by
a more reliable structure. |
