A Christmas song that defines being an emigrant
IT is surely the best Christmas song ever. Perhaps one of the few we
can hear without wincing. When they wrote Fairytale Of New York Shane
MacGowan and Jem Finer somehow put a bit of new life into that most moribund
of song forms. Recently I realised that the song will be 20 years old
next year. Twenty years? Where did that go?
