Precious little love at Ulster rally
THE
LEADERS of the disastrous Love Ulster rally last year in Dublin are now
planning another one for this autumn.
What the hell is wrong with them?
Did they not notice the riots and mayhem the last time when brainless
thugs relieved the boredom in their miserable lives by attacking the northern
contingent and fighting with the gardaí?
I hate to be picky but I always bristle a little when the six counties
are referred to as Ulster. They are simply a part of Ulster.
The last time I checked there were nine counties that make up the historic
province of Ulster so do they refuse to recognise Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan
or do these not count?
However, all that aside, what is the point of such a rally?
The group responsible for the rally are called FAIR (Families Acting for
Innocent Relatives) and claim to represent Unionist victims of the Northern
Irish conflict.
Why are they being so selective? Why not include all families affected
by the violence over the years? A victim is a victim regardless of what
section of the community they are from.
Bombs and bullets do not select on the basis of colour or creed.
I could understand, support and sympathise with any organisation that
sought to build bridges by embracing the relatives of all those people
who died in the stupidly named Troubles.
I have never been able to relate to the term Troubles. It tends to conjure
up a vision of a few dysfunctional families feuding on a local estate
rather than the bombings and butchery carried out by the various factions
over 30 years and I include state-sponsored violence in all of this.
What about the families of the victims caught up in the Dublin and Monaghan
bombs? Do they not count or is that somehow different?
If the organisers plan to hold a rally on much the same basis as the one
in February 2006 and expect full support from everybody then they are
kidding themselves.
