IT SEEMS as if modern Ireland really doesn’t know what to do with St. Patrick’s Day anymore. On the one hand the whole of the government jets off around the world under the spurious claim that a Cabinet Minister appearing in a parade in Brazil, Australia or China is good for Ireland and on the other hand the country now finds itself so sophisticated that all that greenery and shamrockery is an embarrassment.
