JOE HORGAN
IT SEEMS like I’m not the only one with an eye on the issue of
identity. Irish sport just can’t keep away from it. Steve Staunton’s
deliberate insistence that he would be exploiting the granny rule to the
full when putting together a team for Ireland was music to the ears for
those of us who have felt the cold winds of unwelcome that have been swirling
around since Saipan. That he would go out of his way to speak of it on
his first appearance as Ireland manager shows just how much identity has
become an issue, just how much certain influential media voices have retreated
into a ‘one of our own’ mentality that somehow seemed to find
full expression during Brian Kerr’s reign.
