Someone must accept blame
Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair seems determined to hang onto his job however he can.
He’s batted away calls to quit in the wake of his force being convicted
of catastrophic health and safety failings in the shooting dead of Jean
Charles de Menezes on a London Tube.
Let’s not mince words here. Mr de Menezes — an innocent man
— was shot seven times in the head during a botched anti-terror
operation.
That the police decided to defend themselves against charges of breaches
of health and safety laws suggests that Sir Ian and his senior advisors
believed they had done nothing wrong.
The court verdict said otherwise.
It’s now time someone within the service was made accountable for
this appalling and totally avoidable waste of human life.
Otherwise the fear among many people will be something similar could happen
again.
It is time Sir Ian stopped fighting for his job and began trying to right
the failures that led to this whole mess in the first place.
In other words — it’s time someone was held accountable.
London Mayoral candidate Boris Johnson got it right when he said: “Sir
Ian Blair must consider his position. An innocent man was killed through
sheer incompetence and it would be crazy if no-one carried the can.”
