No joke being Irish

I WAS discussing the story about Denis Lusby and his Irish jokes (The Irish Post, September 22) with an Asian friend when he said the Irish think in a peculiar way.

I could not argue with that. No other minority newspaper in Britain Black, Asian or Jewish would actually bemoan equality legislation no matter how misplaced they thought it was.

But there again the Irish have a track record of shooting themselves in the head.

n FOR years anti-racist campaigners pointed out that racist jokes or ethnic jokes if your are a Daily Mail reader were really racial abuse dressed up as humour and were meant to be offensive.

Bernard Manning’s jokes were a typical example of this.

Your newspaper ran stories over many years of how Irish people were subjected in various forms to negative treatment.

Thus it is with surprise that you now run a story about Denis Lusby being a victim of political correctness just because equality officers stoped him telling Irish jokes.

There will always be numpties like Denis Lusby but it is a surprise that your newspaper has adopted Daily Mail speak and have played into the hands of anti-Irish bigots.

n Editor’s note: The Irish Post ran the story on Denis Lusby on a purely factual basis. We believed to ignore it would have been wrong. We trust our own readers to make their minds up as to whether his actions were right or wrong.
