Ban these obscene television phone-ins

WHAT’S in a name? Well quite a lot it seems when it comes to naming a cat.

I don’t wish to downgrade the importance of such a delicate matter because the cat’s feelings obviously have to be the priority here — don’t they?

I am sure there must be legislation somewhere to cover it because there seems to be laws to cover everything else.

If we are honest the opinions of little children come a very poor second. Or at at least so it seems.

I am not finally cracking-up. I am simply trying to work out the thinking behind the stupidity of the BBC’s Blue Peter action when it came to naming a new kitten.

We cannot take television at face value any more — supposing of course that we ever did in the first place — because we do not get what we paid for.

I believe that we probably do get what we deserve.

Blue Peter invited children to decide the name of the show’s new kitten and an online poll decreed that the cat be called Cookie.

A grand little name and not a thing wrong with it I hear you say. Wrong!

The production team decided that the cat should be called Socks because it seemed to suit the kitten better.

Have you ever heard of anything so completely and utterly ridiculous?

Can’t you just imagine the high-level tension-filled discussion late into the night over endless cups of coffee as the Blue Peter production team battled to reach agreement at the 11th hour. Such pressure.

Give me strength.

What was the stupid point of inviting innocent and gullible children to get involved in the meaningless charade in the first place?

It is simply a disgraceful and cynical abuse of children’s trust.

It also shows the contempt in which TV companies hold the public.

Phone-in competitions have been exposed so often now that I really can’t figure-out how they are still operating.

They should all be banned and anybody that has been proved guilty of misleading the public should be unceremoniously booted-out and exposed.

These shows generate so much money it borders on the obscene and as long as they do I suppose nothing will happen.

They will only cease when they are no longer profitable but that won’t happen for a while yet.

I guess it just goes to show that you really can fool some of the people all the time.
