Pull up a chair and enjoy the work
of a master of music
SÉAMUS Ennis’
Ceol, Scéalta Agus Amhráin on CD is an essential purchase
for all lovers of traditional music.
Although primarily known as a master piper this collection of songs, story-telling
and instrumental music on both uilleann pipes and tin whistle is a reflection
on a whole other dimension to Séamus Ennis — his role as
a renowned music and folklore collector.
On some of the tracks Séamus introduces the music and by interspersing
instrumental music with stories that in turn informs the music reveals
some of the atmosphere of what it would be like to be at a session with
Séamus Ennis.
He inherited the piping from his father James Ennis and collected songs
and stories from the great Gaeltacht singers of Ireland and Scotland.
From 1938 to 1942 Séamus worked with Colm O’Lochlainn who
introduced him to Séamus O’Duillearga and the Folklore Commission
where he worked as a collector until 1947 when he moved to Radio Éireann.
During the 1950s he collected material for the BBC and also presented
the pioneering music programme As I Roved Out.
During his life Séamus Ennis was respected for his skill as a musician
and his love for the Irish language and passing on his culture to others.
It was his intimate acquaintance with the Irish language which gave a
particular quality to his instrumental performance of slow airs.
Séamus Ennis died on October 5 in 1982 at Naul, his native home
in north Co. Dublin.
So pull up a chair to the hearth and listen as a master of the tradition
unveils the beauty and the joy of the Irish inheritance.
The CD booklet has an Irish/English language introduction to the stories.
