Hackles raised as Mr Pussy awaits an invite
IT’S NOT even out in Ireland yet — but claws are already being sharpened over
Irish director Neil Jordan’s latest film. Jordan’s eagerly-awaited movie
Breakfast On Pluto has raised the ire of Ireland’s longest-established female
impersonator Mr Pussy — who says he still hasn’t been invited to the premiere
despite the fact that the main character in the original book is called after
him.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as Kitten — the son of an Irish priest who moves
to London and ends up as a transvestite prostitute.
It’s due to be released in Ireland on January 13 following a star-studded
European premiere at The Savoy two days earlier.
But Mr Pussy — AKA Alan Amsby — claims the book’s author Pat McCabe based his
main character on the impersonator.
He said: “I met Pat McCabe one night soon after I reviewed the book. He was very
happy with my review and said: ‘Actually, Alan, he was based on you’.
“I had heard that it was based on me from some friends like Gavin Friday and
Sinead O’Connor — but it was good to hear it from Pat.
“I was really delighted. He is a very lovely man.”
But Mr Pussy is still yet to get an invite to the opening — although some of
Ireland’s younger drag queens have already been told they are on the guest list.
They will tread the red-carpet alongside celebrities such as Neil Jordan, Liam
Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Stephen Rea, Eva Birthistle and Gavin Friday.
Mr Pussy said: “If I don’t get an invite I’m going to give the film rights to my
new play to Jim Sheridan.
“Why shouldn’t they invite me? I’m not going to be put out if they don’t. I
could be working that night and mightn’t be able to go anyway.” |
