Golden Globe triple for acting’s elite

The Irish film industry is delighting in a Golden Globe triple after Cork actors Cillian Murphy and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Hollywood heartthrob Pierce Brosnan were all nominated in the prestigious awards.

Murphy, who has starred in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins and Red Eye, received his nomination for his role in Neil Jordan’s film Breakfast On Pluto. Fellow actor Rhys Meyers, who also hails from Cork, was nominated in the Best Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television category for his role in Elvis.

And Brosnan — who is in direct competition from Murphy in his category — was nominated for his starring role in The Matador.

Other nominees included Ed Harris for Empire Falls, Donald Sutherland for Human Trafficking and Kenneth Branagh for Warm Springs.

Movie legend Anthony Hopkins is set to receive the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award for Acting.

The winners of the prestigious 63rd Golden Globe awards will be announced on January 17.
