Travelling in style in a fairytale glass carriage

By Elaine Sheridan

IT COST £14,000 to buy, one year to make, had to be shipped all the way from America and eventually featured in OK magazine.

It’s that famous horse-drawn carriage that Jordan arrived in on her wedding day.

Fit for a princess the carriage was actually made for a seven-year-old girl for her Holy Communion day. It belongs to Savannah Hudson from Manchester and has since been hired out to many couples for their wedding nuptials.

Savannah’s mum Georgina McDonagh explained the story behind the carriage.

She said: “My dad Gerard was dying and knew that my daughter’s Communion would probably be the last big family affair.

“My dad who comes from Cork really wanted to spoil his granddaughter and asked me how he could do so. So being from a traveller background we wanted to do things in style.

“I set about searching for a Cinderella type carriage that Savannah could turn up to the church in. It was impossible to find anything suitable in this country and I eventually found a company in America that fitted the bill.

“I started designing the whole thing and dad helped pay for it. Thankfully he lived to see his beloved grand-daughter on her special day but sadly died seven weeks later.”

After spending so much money on this ornate piece of work Georgina came up with a plan to make money out of it and put it to good use instead of it just being stored in the garage.

She said: “I knew Jordan was getting married at some stage and thought that this might suit her flamboyant taste. I decided to ring OK magazine and track her down.

“I left my contact details with them and they passed it on to her. She phoned me and asked me to send a picture of it. That was it as soon as she saw it she fell in love with it.

“I came up with ideas of how to change things to her taste like putting pink satin seats in it, fur on the floor and flowers on the roof. She loved all my plans and went with them. She invited me to her wedding at HighClere Castle which was amazing. We really had a great day surrounded by all the stars and the media.”

UNICEF is using the carriage at the charity ball at the end of October and the highest bidder gets to use the coach as a taxi home.

Georgina hires out the carriage to people at £1,400 a time. All the money raised goes towards her children’s education in the future.
