Byrne dodges death

Irish actor Gabriel Byrne has revealed how he cheated death an astonishing five times during his last two movie shoots.

First, in Swaziland filming Wah Wah the 56-year-old actor fell into a rushing river and had to be rescued by quick-thinking stunt extras.

Then on the same movie he narrowly missed being crushed by an oil tanker while driving his car before suffering a panic attack while locked inside a coffin.

Byrne found himself at the centre of two more near-fatal accidents when he moved on to film Jindabyne in Australia.

During one scene in the thriller with sexy co-star Laura Linney, he thought they were doomed to crash when a huge kangaroo jumped onto their car bonnet.

Byrne managed to brake in time but a week later put his foot in it.

During a bush walk he trod on what he first thought was a tree branch — until it started hissing. It was in fact a venomous brown snake. Expert guides hired by movie-makers created a wall of noise to drive the serpent away.

Byrne who is currently filming the remake of One Last Call with Edward Burns said: “I’m still pretty fit — but I think anyone would be shaken after what I’ve been through recently.”
