| U2 prove they are still the best
With Grainne McLoughlin
U2 stole the show at
the Meteor Ireland Music Awards as the rock band snapped up three major
awards.
The band, who have been topping the charts for over 20 years, successfully
fended off newcomers to rake in the award for Best Irish Band whilst their
latest effort How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb took the Best Irish Album.
Before a jam-packed Point Theatre in Dublin, U2, who were represented
by Adam Clayton, were also awarded the Best Live Performance for their
sell-out Croke Park gigs.
The best pop act went to Westlife for the sixth successive year.
The Kaiser Chiefs, Gwen Stefani and Kanye West picked up the international
honors at the function. The Chiefs picked up Best International Band and
the Best International Album award for Employment.
The lifetime achievement award was given to The Pogues. Shane McGowan
accepted the award and said: “It is nice to be a legend when you
are still alive.”
The evening closed with The Pogues and The Dubliners joining forces
for a rendition of Irish Rover.
