Trad music goes online
Michael Queally from Co. Clare is the founder of QOD Music — an
interactive music download site on the web which focuses on traditional
music.
The site prides itself on providing high-quality music that has a folk
or cultural origin.
All tracks are sold as MP3s which enables the listener to enjoy the music
on a wide range of platforms.
When browsing customers can listen to 20-second previews of each track
to get a feel for what is on offer before buying.
All tracks are on sale for ¤1 — and 60 cent of this goes
to the owner of the music.
Artists currently featuring on the website include All-Ireland céilí
band champions the Kilfenora Céilí Band and the Ennis Céilí
Band as well as artists such as Paul Brock and Enda Scahill and Dervish.
Site founder Michael said: “One of the most important things in
my life is music. I play traditional Irish music on the fiddle and have
had the pleasure of playing in many groups and sessions across Europe,
Australia and the USA.
“Throughout my time in music I have heard many great performers
of folk music from various traditions. This music is generally not commercial
enough for mainstream record companies to bring it to market. This was
why I decided to set up this site.
“I am continuously looking for ways to improve the site and if readers
have any suggestions, particularly regarding interesting music that I
have not yet stocked, please click on the ‘contact us’ button.
“I would listen to the CD before putting it on but if it’s
good I will put it on the site.
“My aim is not to critically analyse the music but I do want to
maintain a certain standard and type of music and I won’t put everything
on.
“I’ll make that call when I get the CD.
“I don’t care if musicians are not well-known — in fact
if they aren’t I like it even better as it makes the site more valuable
to its users if I have high-quality unknown artists.”
n Musicians who want to utilise this site to make their music available
to a wider audience should send a CD to 82 Abbey Court, Clare Road, Ennis,
Co. Clare, Ireland.
