Comeuppance for conniving conman

By Grainne McLoughlin

London’s Watermill Theatre is set to play host to Moliere’s play Tartuffe which stars Irishman Des McAleer.

The play opens at the Watermill next month marking the beginning of its seven-venue tour throughout Britain. And it promises the audience a fantastic night of fun and laughter.

Directed by Jonathan Munby, Tartuffe is considered to be a comic masterpiece. In it, the devout and pious Tartuffe is taken into the home of the wealthy Orgon whereupon his mother is immediately smitten with him. The rest of the household, however, feel a strong dislike, believing him to be a conman. But Orgon — played by Des McAleer — becomes so enamoured with his new mentor that he plans to force his daughter to marry him and disinherit his son making Tartuffe sole heir to his fortune. As one might imagine comic chaos ensues as one of drama’s greatest rogues receives his comeuppance.

Running at the Watermill from February 1 to March 18 and touring until May 2006 there’s a chance for everyone to see what promises to be a fantastic production.

McAleer has previously appeared in Twelfth Night, The Price, Angela’s Ashes, This Is The Sea, and has just recently finished filming Goering and The Nuremburg Trials for Channel 4.

John McAndrew also stars.

Tartuffe plays at the Watermill from February 1 to March 18. For further information and tickets contact the Box Office on 01635 46044 or www.watermill.org.uk
