Piping hot in Manchester An evening concert of outstanding
Irish traditional music will be held at The Carlton Club, Carlton Road,
Whalley Range, Manchester, on October 20 featuring superb Uilleann piper
David Power.
David Power was born of a musical family in Co. Waterford. He played the
tin-whistle from a young age and at 10 was encouraged to take up the Uilleann
pipes. Mainly influenced by Seamus Ennis and Tommy Reck, David won the
Senior All-Ireland piping Championship and coveted Oireachtas competition
in 1992.
He represented Ireland at the Lorient Interceltic Festival the following
year. He was a member of Liam Clancy’s Fairweather Band in the early
90s and belonged to the group Gorumna who toured Europe and Asia later
in the 90s.
He researched, compiled, edited and produced a substantial recording and
historical biography of his mentor Tommy Kearney which was released by
Na Píobairí Uilleann under their Master Pipers series. He
has regularly performed at the Uilleann Piping Showcase concert of the
Willie Clancy summer festival, in Milltown Malbay, Co. Clare
Support from local band Long Note featuring Tony Trundle fiddle/vocals,
David Lim uilleann pipes, Paul Callick guitar and Mick Rodden vocals/
guitar.
Doors: 8.15pm for 8.45pm, admission £8 cons £6. Day-time piping
and reedmaking workshop at Manchester Town Hall.
