New book on Irish boxing and stage legend Doyle A book
charting the life and times of Irish boxer Jack Doyle has been released
in time for Christmas.
The biography entitled Jack Doyle: The Gorgeous Gael restores the playboy
boxer to a rightful place in the showbiz and sporting pantheon.
Doyle was a 6ft 5in Cork man with a giant love for life.
In 1933 aged just 19 he drew 90,000 to London’s White City to see
him fight and was making £600-a-week on stage as a singer.
In his heyday as a heavyweight boxer and singer, the playboy married Mexican
film star Movita — the woman who later married Marlon Brando.
The couple were very popular throughout the 1930s and 1940s and were friends
with the British Royal Family.
Author Michael Taub said: “By the age of 30 he had earned and squandered
a fortune.
“His motto was ‘A generous man never went to hell’ and
he lived life to the full.
“His fist-fight with Clark Gable, his life as a film star and gigolo
and his extraordinary post-war career as an all-in wrestler is the stuff
of a legend.”
The book is released in conjunction with the Irish screening of RTÉ
documentary Jack Doyle: A Legend Lost.
