Introducing... The Senses

How and when did you guys meet?

Ronan and Ian are cousins and the rest of us met at infant school so we’ve grown up together. We were mates first and then became a band

What’s the Irish connection?

Our families come from Offaly, Sligo, Donegal, Galway and Mayo. We all grew up in the large Irish community that’s in Coventry.

It wasn’t something we were conscious of when growing up because the area and school we went to meant a lot of people were in the same position as us.

Obviously though where you are brought up has a big bearing on the people you become and we’re proud of where our families come from.

When was the last time you were in Ireland and where?

We all try and get over as much as we can and are over a lot with different family occasions. Kav’s sister is getting married in Foxford next year so he will be over for that.

The last time Bri went back he toured around busking and hitching for a week or so taking in Dublin, Galway, Cork and Kilkenny.

Ian was back just over a year ago visiting family in Ferbane, Co. Offaly and is hoping to go to Sligo this summer as well.

What bands or artists inspire the group?

We’re inspired by loads but we all share a love of bands like The Stone Roses, Spiritualized, Ride and other bands we’ve grown up with like The Pogues, The Saw Doctors but we’re all eclectic and we’re introducing one another to new bands we come across all the time. Sites like myspace mean that you can find so much good music you may not have heard of if it hadn’t been for the internet.

How would you describe the band’s sound?

Creative, melodic, free, thoughtful, atmospheric, dense, purposeful and lasting.

Who would you compare Senses to?

We’re inspired by many but influenced by few.

What’s the last album you bought?

Arcade Fire Neon Bible, Cold War Kids Robbers and Cowards, Maps We Can Create and Arctic Monkeys Favourite Worst Nightmare have all been recent purchases.

What’s the last gig you went to?

The Enemy at the Birmingham Academy. We had guest passes as we were playing The Bar Academy after them. Before that The Aliens.

What’s the last film you watched?

La Haine, Blood Diamond and the Last King of Scotland.

What’s your best personal experience to date?

Having someone match our passion and belief and put out a single for us and when people get into what we’re doing be it live or after hearing it. Another highlight was the capacity gig we played at the Dublin Castle in March.

What songs would you most like to record?

We have a lot of our own tunes that will hopefully turn into our debut album that we want to lay down as soon as we can.

Who would you most like to meet (dead or alive) and why?

John F Kennedy to see if the man lived up to the legend.

What’s next for the band?

Our debut single is out on Oxford-based indie label Shifty Disco. You can find out about it by visiting www.wearesenses.com and you can keep in touch with us at www.myspace.com/sensesmusic where we have our gig listings.

We’ll be playing Coventry, Liverpool and Leicester and have dates around the country and hopefully in Ireland we are in the process of organising.
