Finest at Tyneside
WOLFE TONES founder
member Derek Warfield is appearing at the Tyneside Irish Centre in Newcastle
on Friday April 28 for a night of rousing ballads and music.
The singer, songwriter and historian has spent more than 40 years touring
the world taking with him the history of Ireland in song and story.
He has entertained audiences across the globe and written and recorded
over 50 songs.
Since the mid 1990s when he left the Wolfe Tones he has also recorded
nine solo albums — the most recent released in 2005 was a tribute
to Glasgow Celtic Football Club supporters and entitled Songs for the
Bhoys.
Through his songs, music and lectures Derek has been forceful in reminding
Irish people at home and abroad of their debt to those patriots of past
generations.
The American Civil War also become a source of fascination for Derek when
he was invited to an unveiling of a memorial to an Irishman in Massachusetts
in the 1980s.
He became so engrossed in the history of the period and especially the
role played by so many Irish on both sides that he now gives lectures
on the American Civil War years and the songs and music of the period.
Renowned Irish traditional folk singer Jimmy Crowley from Cork is also
staging a free concert at the Tyneside Irish Centre on May 2nd at 8.30pm.
Jimmy has sung on every stage that is Irish and brings to his repertoire
of songs a unique flavour.
The centre will also host musician and singer Andy Irvine on Thursday
May 11th.
Andy’s solo stage show is a musical travelogue through time and
space.
For more than 40 years he has been a world music pioneer and icon for
traditional music and musicians.
He was a founder member of several bands such as Sweeney's Men, Planxty
and Mozaik and has been hailed as a tradition in himself.
Tickets for all events available from the Tyneside Irish Centre.
