| Feis Ghlaschú celebrates 105th
year THE OLDEST running feis in Britain and now in its 105th
year is Feis Ghlaschú.
It has dinner followed by a Cois Tine (around the fireside) on Saturday,
February 24 from 6.30pm at St. Helens Hall, Shawlands, Glasgow.
The competitive aspect of the Feis is on Sunday, February 25 at Trinity
High School in Cambuslang with competitions in traditional music, Gaelic,
singing, céilí and set dancing.
Feis Ghlaschú was founded in 1902 by the Gaelic League to foster
and encourage Irish culture in the form of dancing, music, poetry and
the Irish language.
Most of the Irish organisations in Glasgow have supported the Feis throughout
the years as can be seen by the titles and dates on some of the valuable
trophies which are awarded.
The Feis today is split into three distinct sections traditional music,
dancing and Gaeilge.
Although the majority of the competitors in the music section come from
Comhaltas branches in Glasgow and Lanarkshire competitions are open to
all.In the Gaelic section there are competitions for Irish speakers and
learners.
Most of the competitors who compete in this section come from Conradh
na Gaeilge who have weekly Irish language classes.
The ballad-singing competition is very popular and also included this
weekend is céilí and set dancing competitions.
The rules for the Glasgow Feis competitions are similar to Fleadh rules
but without the added pressure of qualifying making the day less intense
and more enjoyable for competitors and spectators.
The step dancing section of the Feis which is registered with An Coimisiún
le Rincí Gaelacha is held on the first weekend in March each year
with both solo and team competitions.
