Brush with Ireland from Britain’s living rooms

From Cong in Co. Mayo to the very place that John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara were filmed in Galway for the movie The Quiet Man Ireland has no shortage of beautiful landscapes and scenery.

And now for the first time people living in Britain can create and enjoy them from the comfort of their own living rooms.

Awash On The Web is the brainchild of acclaimed Co. Tyrone painter Dermot Cavanagh and is a new learn-to-paint portal that offers step-by-step video tutorials online on how to paint with watercolours.

The website initiative is a spin-off from his hugely successful BBC television programme Awash With Colour, in which he taught a host of celebrities like boxing superstar Barry McGuigan and singer Brian Kennedy.

Online, painter Cavanagh showcases a series of Irish landscapes and walks the user from initial sketching to applying the finishing touches — giving aspiring artists all over the world the chance to enhance their passion for painting at the simple click of a button.

The father-of-three said: “The site offers true interactivity to painting enthusiasts everywhere.

“It allows the user to take part in a series of water colour workshops and tutorials, lets them pause and rewind and work through those very same paintings featured on the TV series at their own leisure, as well as download sketches from which to paint.”

Cavanagh has been painting since he was seven years old and has earned a reputation for his hands-on tuition style that is commended throughout the world.

The 47-year-old has produced very successful teaching videos on painting and is a published author of many art instructional books.

He also takes painting courses and organises painting holidays where hoards of enthusiasts turn up to his home near Moy to learn techniques and skills.

Awash On The Web offers users the opportunity to learn how to sketch, paint skies, master trees and foliage and create depth.

And it is now available on a free trial basis until next March.

It offers five hours of painting tuition, along with access to the complete 74 episodes of Awash With Colour and a social community to other painters where users can share tips, recommend locations and even display their own work.

Cavanagh said: “It is a privilege to bring the wonder and beauty of the art of landscape painting into people’s living rooms.”
