Baby news is a delight for Ahern

TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern is set to become a grandfather for the first time next summer.

The Irish Taoiseach’s eldest daughter Georgina and her husband and Westlife popstar Nicky Byrne announced last week that they are expecting their first child.

A statement from the couple said: “Nicky and Georgina are delighted to announce they are expecting their first child next summer.”

The couple — who have been married three years — are said to be “over the moon” and “absolutely delighted” by the news.

But they are keeping the exact month of the baby’s birth a secret for now.

The young couple told their respective families the good news a while back before announcing it publicly.

The Taoiseach expressed his delight at the news in an interview on RTÉ Radio.

He said: “I’m delighted for them. I think we all have to plan, not just for our children but for our children’s children and I suppose that shows that’s not too far away.”

In the past couple of days, Nicky has hinted in the media that a baby could be on the cards for himself and Georgina, who is a fitness instructor and business graduate.

He said: “We have been together since we were about 16 and we always said that when we feel the time is right, we’ll start thinking about having kids and we think that maybe we’re at the stage now.”
