| Artist to show work at City Hall
THE
work of renowned London-Irish artist Brian Whelan is set to be exhibited
in both the Mayor’s City Hall offices and in an upcoming book.
The exhibition will take place at the Mayor’s offices on Queen’s
Walk in London about 10 minutes walk from London Bridge.
The book The Myth Of Return is 32 pages of illustrations of Whelan’s
work in full colour along with commentaries by various writers.
The new book has at its heart his relationship with the Irish cultural
traditions in which he grew up.
Born in Ealing of a Dublin father and Kilkenny mother his family spent
a lot of time crossing the water between England and Ireland.
Whelan deals in some respects with the legacy of those times when he says
home wasn’t where you were born and brought up, but somewhere you
visited as if a pilgrim.
One of the contributing authors, Tim Holt-Wilson, has teased out of his
work a deep and thoughtful understanding of the position of Irish emigrants
to their British-born children and in turn those children’s relationship
to that displaced home Ireland itself.
Whelan has become a leading force in a generation of London-Irish artists
and the exhibition at City Hall is a retrospective show of his work.
The launch takes place on Thursday, March 15 with Irish Ambassador Dáithí
Ó Ceallaigh giving the opening address at 7pm.
n The exhibition takes place from Monday, March 12 until Friday, March
16 from 8am until 8pm. For further details phone 07852 529549 or log onto
