Appeal raised to help with Sligo Teach Ceoil AN APPEAL
has been issued to Irish traditional music lovers and supporters throughout
Ireland and abroad by the Riverstown branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí
Éireann during the formal launch of a campaign to raise ?30,000
towards the cost of building the ?250,000 Morrison Teach Ceoil in the
Sligo village.
Details of the campaign were announced by Riverstown Comhaltas branch
chairman Phádraig Kerins following the annual general meeting when
he urged the public in Ireland and abroad to support the completion of
the Teach Ceoil in honour of renowned fiddle player James Morrison.
Morrison was born in 1893 at Drumfin and died in New York in November
1947 at the age of 54.
He is buried in St. Raymond’s cemetery in the Bronx area of New
York.
The James Morrison Teach Ceoil will commemorate the fiddle player and
musicians of the Riverstown area.
The cottage-style building which is currently being constructed by local
man John McGann is located off the entrance road to Riverstown Community
Park.
Archive material relating to James Morrison’s legacy of traditional
music will be housed at the Teach Ceoil. The Riverstown branch also possesses
a photographic record relating to all of the Morrison Festivals.
Those wishing to support the building of the Morrison Teach Ceoil may
do so by contributing ?100 towards the purchase of a block for the cottage.
In return they will receive a receipt and a card which will certify their
generosity toward the project.
A final list of benefactors will also be on display in the Teach Ceoil
which it is hoped will be officially opened next summer.
It is also an ideal opportunity for Riverstown and Sligo natives throughout
the world to support what will be an important cultural and community
facility.
