Newry and Mourne

Located in the south eastern corner of Northern Ireland, Newry and Mourne extends a warm welcome. With stunning beauty, contrasting landscapes, charming villages and bustling towns — Newry and Mourne invites you to experience the many different aspects of its area.

Looking down on Carlingford Lough

Newry city has a rich heritage with many fine buildings and public places. Today Newry is one of the foremost shopping destinations in Ireland and the city centre is a constant hub of activity from Monday through to Sunday. The exciting array of traditional, independent traders and multi-national retailers combine to provide a shopping experience of the very highest standard.

Newry also provides excellent opportunities for sports, relaxation and entertainment. Newry also has two of the oldest churches in Ireland, the ornate gothic Cathedral of St. Patrick and St. Colman and St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland which is over 400 years old.

Beyond Newry the area includes some of the most dramatic and picturesque scenery in Ireland, with two areas designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, namely the Mourne Mountains and The Ring of Gullion.

To the East of Newry, rising dramatically from the sea, the Mourne Mountains dominate much of the landscape, which are contrasted with the lowland plains around Kilkeel and the mudflats and salt marsh areas of Carlingford Lough. The South Down area can offer a variety of mountain ranges, beaches, inland waterways and coastal plains.

To the west of Newry lies beautiful undulating countryside better known as the The Ring of Gullion, this is an area renowned for its outstanding cultural heritage, Celtic mythology and its numerous prehistoric and early Christian sites.

Throughout the area a wide range of accommodation exists, from hotels to hostels, self-catering to B&Bs and guesthouses, caravan to camping — every taste and pocket is catered for.

The entire Newry and Mourne area offers excellent sporting and recreational facilities, and has long enjoyed an excellent reputation for hill climbing, walking, fishing, golfing, cycling and watersports — packaged activity breaks are also available. Many Festivals and events take place throughout the year reflecting the many cultural activities that Newry and Mourne has to offer.
