Bush Irish Backer Funds Nader
The former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, Richard Egan, a major backer of President
George W. Bush's campaign, is funding independent candidate Ralph Nader
in an effort to siphon off votes from the Democratic Party. [Irish Circle]
Niall O'Dowd: Deep Divisions on Iraq
"American people of Irish heritage are absolutely taken aback by what they
are observing. We are shocked by the response (in Ireland). People say,
'It's not an anti-American thing, it's an anti-Bush thing,' but they forget
that he's our president..." [Irish Circle]
Irish Roots - The Hogans, Logans and Cogans
Although these surnames sound alike, the similarities end there. The Hogans
are a Dalcassian family. Hogan comes from the Irish word óg meaning young.
In Irish mythology, the land of eternal youth is called Tir Na nÓg. [Irish
Circle]
Green
Card - Visa Lottery
"I would like to win a lottery green card. I've visited several websites
promising inside information, and I'm wondering how to proceed. What do
you advise?"
The Frames Return
After a collapsed lung, two names changes and record company rejection,
the Frames are back on the top of the Irish charts. Sean O'Driscoll met
up with the band in New York last week. [Irish Circle]
Coleman 'Delighted' at Interview Response
RTE's U.S. correspondent Carole Coleman has said that she stuck to 80% of
the discussion topics submitted to White House staff before her highly controversial
interview with President Bush prior to his visit to Ireland late last month.
[Irish Circle]
Cormac MacConnell
"Greetings from either Buda or Pest! I am not sure which..."
A corker of a place
At one time considered Ireland's literary capital, Cork city now offers
a wealth of goodies for the holidaymaker.
CD Review Téada La An (Gael Linn)
This album is something of a milestone as it marks the return of Ireland's
most prestigious recording label, Gael Linn, back into the music business
to mark their 50 years in existence.
The welcome return of the Irish rover
Shane MacGowan is back and this time he's using his talents to raise money
for legendary Celtic soccer player Jimmy Johnstone's charity. Ronan McGreevy
found out why. [Irish Circle]
It's official: Gaeltacht placenames are Irish'
Tourists visiting some of Ireland's most scenic areas are heading into unknown
territory - as a result of a new government order. [Irish Circle]
Shy film director takes the plunge
It was the beginning of the marriage for the man who directed The End of
the Affair - as Neil Jordan and his long-term partner and assistant Brenda
Rawn tied the knot in Dublin.
Irish primate and saint executed at Marble Arch
If you are passing near London's Marble Arch on Sunday, pause and spare
a thought for the last Irishman to be executed for propagating the Catholic
faith.
Beware the shadow of Thatcherism
"Margaret Thatcher's most stunning victory was not her winning of three
elections. It was not her destruction of Britain's industrial communities..."
