One of my assignments as a British Reference consultant at the Family History Library (hereafter referred to as FHL) is to update the Register of Ireland Census and Census Substitutes. Given the almost total loss of pre-1901 Irish census returns, researchers have turned to other sources (substitutes) that fill the void.
